How Carbon Sky Index Works
ADS-B Flight Tracking
We ingest real-time ADS-B signals to detect when private jets depart and arrive — identifying each completed flight by aircraft registration, origin, and destination.
Emissions Modelling
CO₂ is calculated using a two-phase model: an LTO cycle aligned with ICAO defaults for takeoff and landing, plus a cruise phase based on per-aircraft fuel burn rates. Output is tank-to-wake CO₂ only.
Structured Intelligence
Raw flight records are transformed into time-series analytics — route patterns, emissions trends, frequency data, and operating cost estimates — updated continuously.
Distance & Flight Time
Each flight distance is calculated using great-circle routing between airports. Flight duration is derived from ADS-B first and last detection — giving us the two inputs needed for emissions modelling
Modelled estimates based on ADS-B data and ICAO-aligned methodology. See our full methodology for assumptions and known limitations.
Emissions in Context
1 Private Jet Flight
3.2 tons CO₂
Jets consume large amounts of aviation fuel, producing higher emissions per distance. A flight emits about 250 grams of CO₂ per passenger per kilometer traveled.
Average Car
4.6 tons CO₂
Cars burn petrol or diesel, releasing CO₂ from fuel combustion. On average, one car trip emits 120–180 grams of CO₂ for every kilometer driven.
A single cross-country private jet flight produces about the same emissions as an average car in an entire year
