Flights with unresolved origin country are excluded from this ranking. Share is calculated as the country’s flight count divided by the total of resolved flights over the same window.

About this data

Each cell aggregates origin, destination, and great-circle midpoints from CSI’s tracked private and business aviation flights over the last 90 days. Cells are coloured by flight-point density. Emissions are calculated using the EUROCONTROL EMEP/EEA Guidebook 2023 LTO + cruise methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this map show?

Each cell on the map represents an ~11 km grid square. The colour shows the density of flight points (origin, destination, and route midpoint) from private and business aviation flights tracked by CSI over the last 90 days. Lime cells have the highest concentration of activity.

How often is this data updated?

The coverage snapshot refreshes daily at 04:00 UTC using a 90-day rolling window. Each refresh replaces the previous day's snapshot, so the map always reflects the most recent 90 days of tracked activity.

Why are some regions empty?

Most empty areas have no tracked private aviation activity. In rare cases, aircraft in those regions may not broadcast ADS-B signals — this can occur in certain oceanic corridors or where regulatory requirements differ.

What counts as "private aviation"?

Carbon Sky Index tracks business jets identified by ICAO aircraft type designator. Commercial airlines, scheduled charter, cargo, and military flights are excluded. See the full classification rules on the methodology page.

Can I access this data via API?

Yes — the coverage snapshot and full flight data are available on Pro and Enterprise plans. The /api/coverage endpoint is public and returns the latest density snapshot.

How is CO₂ calculated?

Emissions are estimated using the EUROCONTROL EMEP/EEA Guidebook 2023 LTO + cruise methodology, calibrated across aircraft types tracked in the CSI database. Figures are modelled estimates, not direct measurements.
